COOK DIAMONDS is the perfect
example of a family business success story. Colleen began working
in the jewelry industry in 1974 as an assistant to a local diamond
importer. After two years, Colleen decided she liked the business
well enough to strike out on her own.
In 1976, COOK DIAMONDS opened its
doors in the World Trade Center. In addition to its core business
of diamond importing, Colleen added gold chains and other fine
jewelry to the Company’s inventory during the first two years. With
the reputation for honesty COOK DIAMONDS was building, things
really began to take shape. The next thirteen years were marked by
expansion into the designing and manufacturing of jewelry as well
as the addition of colored gemstones to the ever-increasing
inventory of the young company. Recognizing the opportunities the
wide audience at the World Trade Center provided, the Company
doubled the size of its showroom in 1982. Colleen also added brand
name watches such as Piaget and Rolex as well as custom watch
accessories to further broaden the products available to their
customers. It was during this time that Colleen’s youth and
enthusiasm, as well as her growing reputation for quality, honesty,
and service, began to pay off.
The 80’s were a tough time for the
jewelry business, and during this period when many other companies
were just trying to "keep their heads above water," COOK DIAMONDS
was actually building up speed. In 1984, Colleen began bringing in
more unique European designs as well as several Italian lines,
positioning Cook among the most innovative marketers in the
industry. COOK DIAMONDS repeat business with customers was
unrivaled.
In keeping with her philosophy of
leading the way in jewelry trends and offering the most diverse
inventory available to their customers, COOK DIAMONDS introduced
the Tag Heuer watch line to the Southwest.
Cook became a major source, not
only for local jewelers and private customers, but also saw an
ever-broadening audience nationally and internationally, especially
in Mexico. The fact that the Company was not reliant on the local
economy was a major contributor to their continued growth. This,
along with the continuing practice of putting profits back into the
Company led to the ultimate purchase of their main competition in
1987. The acquisition positioned COOK DIAMONDS as a leading watch
supplier in the Southwest, as well as a major loose diamond
importer and fine jeweler.
COOK DIAMONDS has continued to
expand the Company’s client base to include more international
customers and moving into specialty events as well as recognition
and incentive programs for major corporations. At its present
location, in the World Trade Center, Suite 7802, COOK DIAMONDS has
nearly 2000 square feet of prime showroom space.
Recognizing the continuing need
for innovative designs and marketing techniques, Colleen traveled
extensively to search out unique new styles that give their
customers a selection unavailable from most mainstream
jewelers.
COOK DIAMONDS has the
distinction of designing and creating two of the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl
rings. The Dallas Cowboys’ Super
Bowl XXVII ring was the largest, most valuable and unique ring in
sports history. Designed and created by Balfour and COOK DIAMONDS,
the centerpiece of this year’s championship ring was a dazzling
five-point Star shape diamond. COOK DIAMONDS represented the only
cutter in the world to have perfected the art of laser technology
and hand faceting a diamond into the shape of a symmetrical star
without sacrificing the stone’s natural brilliance and clarity.
Each handcrafted ring was the end result of 200 painstaking steps
and was subjected to strict quality control measures to ensure its
status as a valuable collector’s item.
For the Super Bowl XXVIII ring,
COOK DIAMONDS was again selected as the diamond supplier. The
Cowboys chose a design that was centered around four Marquise
diamonds to commemorate their fourth Super Bowl victory.
When asked what was the secret of
their success, Colleen said that it was the ability to deliver the
highest quality product available, accompanied by personal service
at an affordable price. Colleen added, "We want the people who come
in to remember who we are and the personal service they received.
In short, we want them to come back." Colleen elaborated on another
of COOK’S distinguishing features, explaining "We feel it is
important for our customers to understand exactly what they are
buying, the fine craftsmanship of a watch or piece of jewelry, or
the unique characteristics of a precious gem."
COOK DIAMONDS also believes
in giving back to the community that has helped make them
successful. They are contributors to many charitable fundraising
activities.
